School is back in session! Not only are young adults hitting the books this fall, many of these young drivers are also hitting the roads. If one of these new drivers someone you know or your own child, this checklist is exactly what they need.
Check lights and windshield wipers
You won’t want to get caught in the dark because days are shorter and not have any lights work. Lights and wipers are some of the easiest checks you can make, and you can replace them yourself. However, they’re also some of the most important parts to have. Take two minutes out of your daily drive and give them a once-over, and top off the wiper fluid, too.
Schedule a brake inspection appointment
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – your last brake inspection shouldn’t be a #TBT moment. This is the biggest safety feature of your vehicle and essential when dealing with stop-and-go traffic in September when everyone is back to school. You have a warning light for them on your dash, but don’t trust it 100% – get an ASE-certified technician to give you a professional opinion. Also, we highly recommend watching Tommy Boy to get a hilarious perspective on the brake industry.
Check tire treads and pressure
This is an underrated check for the fall since it’s big on the winter checklist. Tires are what keep you moving smoothly and efficiently, and these are easy check-ups. Most new cars have systems built into the dash that tells you the exact PSI in each – make sure it meets your car’s recommendations, and fill it up at your local Wawa if it’s low. You need tire tread to keep traction on the road, and we have a simple trick to check on it: place a penny head-down in the tread. If Lincoln’s head is still visible, you should get new tires.
“Back-to-school time is hectic for most families, but scheduling a complete vehicle inspection is time well spent,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Knowing your vehicle was checked by a professional technician will give you peace of mind and make all those trips to school and activities safer and less stressful.”
